Painting vintage metal statuettes with acrylic, should I use a primer?
I'm going to be painting some vintage metal statuettes with acrylic paint. Some of them are a bit rusty, however, and I'm worried that rust may show through, or that it may not stick,. Any help or suggestions? I'm buying all my stuff from Micheal's.
Priming is always a good practice. Some metals (aluminum, for example) accept acrylic gesso well, especially if the surface is grained lightly by sanding. However, since your statues have some rust, they are probably either iron or steel. For this reason I think you should get a bonding primer from a paint store (architectural coatings, not artists' colors). There are alkyd-based and other primers that stick well to metal, and which will accept acrylics. You will want to devote some time to removing the rust, though, or it will cause problems, regardless of the paints you choose.
