Is a cocker spaniel a good dog to keep as a pet in a coastal town?
We have been planning on having a dog around. We generally move around on transfers, to coastal towns in India. Reside in flats. Looking for a dog...my wife loves the idea of a cocker spaniel....I am worried that the hot and humid climate may be a little too much for the dog. Or should we settle for a daschund? Any suggestions would be welcome!!
Cocker Spaniels tend to be very hyper. They tend to get a LOT of ear infections and eye problems. They require a lot of exercise every day. They must be professionally groomed every 6 to 8 weeks or they look like shaggy messes. The coat tangles easily and requires frequent (daily is good) brushing and combing.
I don't know if a Cocker Spaniel or a Dachshund would suit you better, or if either is in any way right for you. Maybe neither is. There is a lot more to picking the right breed than liking the way it looks or the size of it. Will you be able to find rentals that allow dogs? You need to consider many variables before you select an animal that should be around for the next 14 or more years. I urge you to put a great deal more thought into it, and possibly consult some of the breed selection guide books from Dogwise, www.dogwise.com.
A bad choice is going to make all of you unhappy fora long time so choose wisely.
