Silver Dish
If a bowl is marked "sterling," does that mean the whole bowl is sterling silver?
I just discovered a silver platter which is marked "sterling" on the bottom. The inside of the bowl has tarnished that seems consistent with the money, but I was wondering, if it is being marked "sterling" Does this mean that the bowl is all sterling or simply that the bowl contains sterling?
If the bowl seems all the money, then I would say probably all sterling. This can become a bit complicated with jewelry, where some parts could be sterling silver plate and others, but with a silver bowl plain I think that's enough simple: it looks like a bowl sterling. Are there any other marks on the bottom of the bowl? Antique sterling will often "features" stamped on the document indicating the manufacturer, the place he came, and when he was done. These forms are usually of animals, sometimes an anchor, and often a letter indicating the date. If the bowl has these marks, the pound and you may be able to learn to about seeking "money punch" and do research. Sterling silver is not actually pure silver. It is an alloy, being most often 92.5% silver and the rest usually copper. (Sterling pieces are stamped "925" for identification.) Other percentages were common in the past and certain other countries. Pure silver is too soft to use, so it needs another metal added to make it stronger. Anyway, if your bowl says "Sterling" I think the likelihood is that this is the pound sterling. Hope this helps!
