Quadruple Plate
I purchased an antique crumb tray. Should I polish it? It's silver.?
I got the crumb tray at an antique store. It says New Amsterdam on the back. Silver Company. Quadruple Plate and the number 431 on both plates. The finish is almost black and it has an etched flower design on the top of each tray. It is okay to polish or will that take away from its value.
When reading about cleaning silver on the web, there seems to be some degree of ambiguity as to which methods are safe and which are not. There are so many chemical liquids, pastes, dips, electrochemical devices and solutions on the market. It's a veritable minefield of potential mishap and detriment!
You have an antique silver plated item. You need to take extreme care cleaning.
Wash first with warm soapy water in a non lemon scented phosphorus free detergent or wipe with Purell. Gently clean with a mild silver polish and a soft flannel cloth pr real chamois. Cleaning will remove a small amount of the plating. But right now you have a tarnished silver plated item no fun in that. Once you have cleaned it store it in a Ziploc with non acidic tissue paper. Occasionally wash it in a non lemon scented phosphorus free detergent or wipe with Purell. Dry it with a flannel cloth and repack it. Bring it out when you have occasion to display handling it with the flannel.
Be sure to polish it, if you can find Renaissance wax your ahead of the game. It will put a protective surface on the piece.
