is it safe to serve wine in a silver pitcher?
I don't know much about my pitcher, but its very old, and its silver on copper. Is it safe to serve wine out of it?
I don't know much about my pitcher, but its very old, and its silver on copper. Is it safe to serve wine out of it? Can you explain any special techniques (such as dropping salt and a penny in?) in more detail? Thanks!
Unless there is silver cleaner residue on the pitcher, it should not harm the wine. Silver is an antibiotic and isn't very soluble, even in wine. Unless you are mixing a wine beverage, like sangria, there is no reason to serve the wine from a pitcher if it is coming from a bottle to begin with.
However, If it is a homemade or young red wine that is high in tannins, it is okay to decant it and aerate it to smooth out the flavor before serving. Some young white wines, like a Reisling, may be sulfurous and can use vigorous decanting to make it better for serving.
As long as there is no lead metal involved, a clean silver pitcher should be safe.
