Copper Mixing
Can iron and copper be mixed?
I need a couple of iron-based alloys for a school project. I've got to obtain these metals myself and then get a metal workshop to melt them together for me. Thing is I have found no examples of any iron-copper composite and so am unsure if there would be any reasons they can't be mixed.
Also, i need to know about a iron-aluminium alloy. I realize iron oxide and aluminium powder make thermite but what if it was just normal iron and aluminium?
If sufficiently heated, any two metals can be alloyed together. There may not be any special USE for the resultant alloy, but you can do it. There are probably no historical examples of iron-copper alloys because someone did it, back in the early days of the Metal Age, and discovered there was no benefit to it - it wasn't harder or stronger, it didn't hold an edge better - so it never became commonplace.
